Afton, MN: May 4, 2008 The captain's official game account: On a beautiful May afternoon in the city of Lake St. Croix Beach, the St. Croix Base Ball Club and Afton Red Socks crossed bats to play a match game of ball in front of many local residents. The St. Croix's would add two more aces in their half of the second, were shut out in their third and added one ace in their fourth. The Afton club also added one ace in their fourth and after four innings, the score stood 10 - 3 in favor of the St. Croix's. The fifth inning saw both clubs with some strong hitting. The St. Croix's tallied eight times in their half while the Afton club tallied another five. In their half of the sixth the St. Croix's were held to no aces because of some fine displays of fielding by the Afton Club and then the Afton boys tallied another three aces in their half of the inning to make the score 18 - 11 in favor of the St. Croix's. Afton was held to no aces in the seventh inning, scored twice in the eighth and no aces in the final at bat. The visiting St. Croix's tallied six more aces in their seventh and another five in their eighth. The final score being St. Croix's 29, Afton Red Socks 13. For the St. Croix's, Mr. Cagley scored 5 aces, Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Sjogren and Mr. Peterson all tallied four times, Mr. Robinson, Mr. Arpi and Mr. Ebnet tallied three times while Mr. Smith tallied twice and Mr. Rose, who injured a finger and left the contest, tallied once before he left.
