Northfield, MN: July 4, 2008 The captain's official game account: The St. Croix Base Ball Club was invited to participate in a match game of base ball on the Nation's birthday - July 4th. The St. Croix's traveled from the beautiful St. Croix River Valley to the community of Northfield. Under the shadow of Old Main on the campus of higher education at St. Olaf College, the St. Croix's crossed bats with a friendly rival, the Northfield Silver Stars. The St. Croix's were sent to strike first, and with some fine fielding were set down in order. The Silver Stars were also set in order and after the first inning, the gathered masses found the score stood at zero to zero. The Silver Stars opened the scoring with some long skyballs and a few St. Croix's miscues in the field. The Silver Stars tallied five aces in their second, but the St. Croix's found their hitting stroke and tallied four times in their half of the fourth inning to bring the score to 5 to 4 with Northfield still in the lead. In their half of the fourth inning, the Silver Stars again found their stroke and hit some heavy balls into the field and tallied another three aces and repeated that number of tallies in their fifth. The St. Croix's were able to tally twice in their fifth with some fine base running but the Northfield defense was too strong and the St. Croix's tallied no more during the match. A large crowd of cranks found their way to the playing field and cheered on the home club with each fine hit. They also cheered the visiting club on some of the fine plays in the field that were made. The final score of the match had 16 aces for the Northfield Silver Stars and 6 aces for the visiting St. Croix Base Ball Club. Another match between the two clubs is scheduled at the same field in early September. For the St. Croix's both Mr. Hammer and Mr. Cagley tallied two aces, Mr. Ebnet and Mr. Pfundstein tallied once each.
