The captain's official game account:
Saint Croix's defeat Afton in first match of the season
The Saint Croix Base Ball Club of the Washington County Historical Society started their 2006 season traveling to the river community of Lake St. Croix Beach to cross bats with the Afton Red Socks of the Afton Historical Society.
The weather was dreary at best; cold north wind blowing and rain showers came and went throughout the match. The field was soaked, but with help from several members of both clubs, most of the collected rainwater was drained off the field and the match started on the appointed hour.
The Saint Croix's won the coin toss overseen by umpire (Chairman) Thein. The Saint Croix's elected to strike first, sending the Afton club out in the field. There was no let up in the striking of the St. Croix's from the previous meetings between the two clubs in years gone by, after the first inning, the St. Croix's had tallied 11 aces, but the Afton Club answered with one of their own in their first.
The match then became a close contest then on out. The St. Croix's managing to tally one ace in the second, two in the third, one more in each the sixth, seventh and ninth. Although the Afton Club did not tally another ace throughout the match, their defense improved a great deal and made the contest an enjoyable one for the cranks that braved the weather and watched the match. The final tally being the Saint Croix's 17 and the Afton Red Socks 1.
The entire club of the St. Croix's hitting well and all tallying at least one with exception of the club captain who failed to cross home base. The St. Croix's also had some fine fielding plays from the outfield as well as the infield with special notation to Mr. Greenlow, Mr. Kimball, Mr. Rose at behind and Mr. Ebnet at first base.
